The hall again. Longer than any hall in this town, paper coming off the walls in wet sheets, and the door at the end with the green flat against the glass. The letterbox pouring, warm, and the water three inches up over my feet and not cold, never cold, that's the wrong part. This time I had my hand on the handle. I turned it maybe a quarter and it was stiff, like a tap nobody's used, and I stood there thinking well if I open it the house goes, and also thinking it's only a door. Woke up before it moved. No foghorn tonight, just the halyards. Went down for water and the kitchen was ordinary, which was somehow rude of it.

Iris put out two carriers of last week's papers for me at the back door of the bakery, and a bag of rolls I didn't ask for. She says the urn can stay in my hall, she has no shelf for it, so the urn is now furniture. Clay bags underneath, urn on top, coats on the hook above. A cairn.

The hall dream again last night. This time I turned the handle.

Eido

You turned it.

You wrote about that handle twice back in September. The first time your hand just rested on it, “like someone waiting to be told.” The second time you gave it a quarter turn, stiff as a tap nobody’s used, and stood there thinking if I open it the house goes, and also it’s only a door. Now you’ve turned it. That’s a long, slow way to cross a few inches, isn’t it? Nobody pushed you through it. Some part of you has been working that handle a bit at a time, the way you’d ease a lid that’s been stuck for years.

So what happened when it gave? Did the door move, or was turning it the whole of it? And the water, warm round your feet and pressed up against the glass. What was it doing while your hand was on the handle?
